Regulation Regulation is the adjustment of the parts of a piano to make it play to its full potential. After a regulation a piano player should notice an improvement in the evenness of touch and tone throughout the keyboard, an increase in the speed and power of playing, and a better control of the keys under his or her fingers. Just like a bicycle, after riding for a few months or years it will need a tune-up. The brakes might need adjusting, the gears oiling, or the spokes truing. Pianos are similar, except that there are over 1500 parts that can be adjusted. Over time, felts can get crushed or worn and wood parts will shrink or expand due to changes in humidity.
